On Apr 7th, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion (MATEC) Academic Committee Meeting 2022 was held in Guangdong Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT). Built as a cross-discipline, high-level and international key research platform, MATEC has received a research grant from Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province in 2021.

MATEC is GTIIT’s first provincial level research platform being recognized by the Guangdong government, and has won support from municipal and provincial governments, as well as the academic world. In the meeting, the academic committee, composed of specialists and scholars from top institutes and universities including the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Sun Yat-Sen University, Xiamen University and Southern University of Science and Technology, together with MATEC team, led by Prof. Daniel Tan from GTIIT’s Materials Science and Engineering Program, and heads of relevant government departments, discussed the development of the lab.

MATEC is backed up with an elite team, consists of 33 well-known professors and scholars. In recent 3 years, the Laboratory has undertaken 42 national and international research projects. "The Academic Committee has given full support to the construction of MATEC. We hope to give full play to GTIIT’s international talents, to make breakthroughs in the scientific discoveries," said Gong Xingao, expert consultant of MATEC, Academician of CAS and Chancellor of GTIIT.

MATEC has set four research directions: electromechanical conversion,  energy storage and solar cells, catalytic conversion, materials processing and characterization. "To efficiently converse different types of energy into usable ones, depends on new materials energy, which is also our vision and mission." Prof.Daniel Tan, director of the laboratory, introduced the overview and management of MATEC. He pointed out that the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province has set materials and energy as important research directions, and GTIIT is striving to contribute to Shantou and Guangdong.

Wang Nan, Assistant Professor of MSE; Aleksandra Baron-Wiechec, Associate Professor of MSE; Zhong Ziyi, Professor of CE; and Qi Yuanshen, Assistant Professor of MSE provided an overview of research directions and introduced members of MATEC.

After the presentations, members of the Academic Committee affirmed that the Lab is a young and international team with strong academic strength. Academicians and scholars gave suggestions about frontier directions of research, experience to manage an institute and the future of MATEC. Many of them also shared a willingness for further cooperation.

“Same as GTIIT, MATEC is an active platform gathering international talents!” said Wang Xuehua, Vice President of Sun Yat-Sen University. He noted that as the Chinese campus of the Technion, GTIIT should function at all its capacity to contribute to the country’s development.

The Laboratory is holding MATEC Seminar Series to cooperate with the country’s renowned institutes, experts and scholars. On March 23, Dr. Xuezhong, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at GTIIT, delivered a speech on “Membranes for CO2 Separation: from Fundamental Research to Industrial Application”. According to Prof. Tan, the Seminar, being one of the main academic events of the Key Laboratory, will invite MATEC professors, graduate students and external experts to give academic lectures and share their research results. “MATEC will take advantage of its features and international team members to facilitate collaboration and talent training.”
